The rule of thumb
A common estimate is about 5 meters of top thread per 1,000 stitches, with bobbin use roughly a third of that. Dense fills and satin use a little more, running stitches less.
Planning a run
- Add 10% for thread changes, breaks and tie-offs.
- Split the total across colors using the stitch count per color from the stitch file viewer.
- Keep a spare cone of your main color for any order over a few dozen pieces.
