Large designs that do not pucker
Jacket backs run tens of thousands of stitches. Without the right underlay and fill strategy, the fabric shrinks under the design and the result ripples. We build large-format files in sections, with varied fill angles and controlled density, so they lie flat.
What goes into a good jacket back file
- Edge-run and zigzag underlay sized to each area
- Fill angles changed between neighboring sections to spread the pull
- Slightly lower density on very large fills to keep the design flexible
- Sequencing that finishes one area before moving to the next
- Split options when the design is larger than your biggest hoop
Typical sizes
| Garment | Common width |
|---|---|
| Adult jacket back | 10 to 12 in |
| Hoodie back | 10 to 12 in |
| Varsity jacket back | 11 to 14 in |
| Youth sizes | 8 to 10 in |
Tell us your largest hoop and we will fit the design to it or split it with alignment marks.
Planning the run
Big designs take time. Use the production run time calculator to estimate how long an order will take on your machines.
Questions about jacket backs
Can you split a design across two hoopings?
Yes. We add alignment stitches so the second half lines up exactly.
Will a big design make the jacket stiff?
Not if it is digitized well. We keep density sensible and use lighter fills on large areas.
Can I use the same file on a hoodie and a leather jacket?
Ask for two versions. Leather needs fewer, longer stitches so the needle holes do not cut the material.
